DIY Natural Beauty Remedies

Share

spaBeauty regimens have been a part of our society since we discovered mirrors. Humans have been creating potions and tonics to rid us of blemishes for centuries. Perhaps the most famous beauty of the ancient world, Cleopatra, would bathe in milk and almond oil baths to smooth her skin. It must have worked because she’s still remembered as the most beautiful and strong woman of Egypt. Hieroglyphs detail that the ancients used ash and naturally occurring salts as soaps and even used aloe vera as a wrinkle reducer.

Natural herbal remedies still provide myriad health and wellness benefits. You can still use these ancient beauty treatments today and save money in the process. In fact, we tested some DIY beauty treatments that we made using products here at Farmview. Follow the recipes below and emerge with glowing skin and a fresh face. Just in time to enjoy the hot summer sun!

Coconut Oil Hair Maskcoconutoil

Coconut oil has become the go-to natural beauty product because it can do pretty much anything. It’s extremely moisturizing and healing, making it perfect for split ends and frizzy hair. This mask uses coconut oil and one raw egg to make sure your hair is smooth and strong.  You’ll need:

  • 1 cup coconut oil

  • 1 egg

  • 4 tbs. olive oil

  • 2 tbs. honey

Pour 1 cup of coconut oil into a microwave safe bowl. Heat in the microwave for 1 minute or a minute and a half. You want the oil to be warm, but not boiling. Add your olive oil and honey to the mixture. Be sure that your mixture has cooled, so when you add your egg, the egg will not cook. Pour the oils straight onto your hair and massage from root to end. Wrap your hair in a towel and let the mixture sit for 30 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as normal.

Sugar Scrub

saltThis recipe uses coconut oil as well, though olive oil may be substituted in a pinch. Sugar is a wonderful exfoliant because it removes dry skin without scarring any sensitive areas. And, because you can use your favorite body wash or lotion, you’ll have skin worthy of Cleopatra herself!

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil (or olive oil)

  • Body wash (whichever brand you prefer)

Take your sugar and coconut oil and whisk together in a small bowl. Add your creamy body wash in. The body wash should act as a combining agent, but your mixture should be fairly gritty.

DIY Teeth WhiteningHow-To-Make-Toothpaste-2

This one comes straight from our grandmothers. Before the invention of toothpaste, women (and men) used baking soda to brush their pearly whites. And, some toothpastes still include baking soda as a major part of their formulas. Baking soda can removes stains from your teeth and hydrogen peroxide both cleans and whitens your choppers. There really isn’t a recipe, but you’ll want to create a paste by combining baking soda and hydrogen peroxide together. The paste should be gritty and not runny or watery. Try this:

  • 1 tbsp. baking soda

  • 1/2 tbsp. hydrogen peroxide

Mix into a paste and brush mixture onto your teeth. Let the mixture sit for 5-15 minutes, depending on how much you need to whiten, and then rinse. Brush your teeth as normal and rinse with a mouthwash.

Remember, most of the products you’ll need for these beautiful DIY treatments can be found at Farmview Market. You’ll be a vision of loveliness and your wallet won’t be looking too bad either!
