Founded in Atlanta by Cassie Carter, Cheeky Maiden began the way a lot of good things do — with a growing family and a simple question: “Why can’t we recognize the ingredients in the products we use every day?”
In 2012, with their first baby on the way, Cassie and her husband Nick wanted soap that felt safe, nourishing, and not complicated. So they rolled up their sleeves, ditched the chemicals, and started making soap the old-fashioned way. And just like that, Cheeky Maiden Soap Co. was born!
They continue to produce every product—from bars of soap, lip balms, and deodorants to laundry detergents, bath bombs, and lotions—with the original philosophy. Each item is thoughtfully sourced and made in small, hands-on batches.
The best example is in how they scent their products.
In much of the beauty and skincare industry, “fragrance” can mean a complex blend of synthetic compounds designed in a lab for uniformity and consistency. Cheeky Maiden takes a quieter approach. Instead of artificial fragrance oils, they use pure essential oils.
Why Does It Matter?
When you breathe in a scent, it travels through your olfactory system and connects directly to the region of your brain which is responsible for your mood, memory, and emotional response. That’s why the smell of rosemary can feel energizing, lavender can feel calming, or citrus could feel uplifting. Synthetic fragrance oils are created to imitate those smells, but they typically recreate only the scent itself, not the full spectrum of naturally occurring compounds found in the plant. Essential oils, on the other hand, contain dozens of naturally occurring constituents that occur together in nature. The complexity is part of what makes plant-based scents feel balanced and authentic. Essential oils also do not have synthetic additives and stabilizers that are often used in fragrance oils which can contribute to skin irritation or sensitivities.
For Cheeky Maiden, using essential oils isn’t about following trends. It’s about integrity. If an ingredient doesn’t serve the body well, it doesn’t belong in the bar. When you read their ingredient list, you’ll recognize what’s there. Nothing extra and nothing hidden!
